Thank you for sharing your beautiful work! I love this pattern! I have searched throughout the pattern and links and comments and cannot find instructions for the 1/2 squares? I am looking forward to crocheting this afghan. Thanks again!! 🙂
Dada says
Hi Sue,
Thank you! I’m glad you like the pattern, and that you decided to make it for yourself! ? There aren’t 1/2 squares. The blanket is made of 16 regular squares.
Hugs,
Dragana
Barbara Struck says
The picture in the link CLEARLY shows half squares!! I find it very strange that you say it is made up of 16 squares and no half squares then link to that picture. Is this afghan designed and made by someone else perhaps? Please advise where to find the original picture in the photo you linked too as I am interested in making it! Also who designed the one in the photo?

Hi Deborah,
I found the pattern for that flower granny square in a Japanese craft book. You’re welcome!? ? ?
Hayley says
Hi just made this blanket. Doing the border- should the first row read 3dc, 3ch, 3dc in corners? Because the second row says to do dc, ch2, dc in chain 3 space?
Dada says
Hello Hayley,
I’ve just updated the pattern for the border, so I hope it won’t be confusing anymore.
Hayley says
Thank you so much. I kind of had to wing it as I’m on my last round but I’ll definitely make this pattern again. I made it in raw cotton dk so it is really big and heavy. I fell asleep under it a few times while making it. Lol

Hi there. I am so lost. I’m more of a visual person. I can totally do any with pictures do you have with the steps because I just can’t get this. And I’m honestly trying to just make one square.
Dada says
Hi Jessica,
I’m sorry to disappoint you, but I have only written pattern for this blanket.
Noreen wieland. says
Thank you for the beautiful pattern. I’ve worked up one square so far. Why is your pattern different than the one pictured?
Dada says
Hi Noreen,
You’re welcome! I’m glad to hear that you made one square so far. I don’t know what you ment when you said that my pattern is different from the one pictured?
Gail says
These are crocheted squares?
Dada says
Yes, they are.
Deb Massey says
Please explain layout of all squares for joining. You said there are no half-squares, but it appears to be joined on the diagonal, which would require half-squares to achieve the straight sides. I can’t figure this out. Thank you
Dada says
Hi Deb,
For this blanket you need to make 16 squares in total and to join them together, horizontally first, then vertically. There aren’t half-squares, or triangles. If you made one square, you would see how it works.
Margaret says
Your pattern looks wonderful! What yarn did you use and how many skeins did it take? Thanks in advance.
Dada says
Thank you Margaret! I’m so glad you like it! The yarn I used is no. 464 “Cotton Gold”, from Alize (the Turkish manufacturer) – 55% cotton and 45% acrylic. I spent 7 skeins of 100g, and used 4 mm crochet hook.
margaret says
Hi Dada, I too fell in love with your blanket. I am not use to complicated crochet patterns, but thought that I could do yours. However, I have run into trouble. Firstly, there is no provision in the patttern, that says turn your work, as it is in a square is this not necessary? Then, I got to Rnd 2, and seem to end up with a bunch of popcorn stitches all bunched together. When you say:- Rnd 2 begin popcorn (ch 3 + 3dc Is that your first popcorn 4. Then you go on PPc -4 in next ch space, so is that the ch3 + 3 dc. Perhap the pattern is too difficult, and I need to get some help, once i learn it I wil be ok. Many thanks for taking the time to read this. Margaret, Australia.
Dada says
Hi Margaret,
I’m glad you decided to try one of my patterns! But, if you’re an inexperienced crocheter, maybe you should try some of my free step-by-step tutorials. I have Primavera blanket tutorial, which is free and simple: https://www.dadasplace.com/2014/03/primavera-flowers-granny-square-tutorial.html
then The whisper of joy blanket, also free step-by-step tutorial with lots of popcorn stitches, if you like them: https://www.dadasplace.com/2018/02/free-crochet-pattern-the-whisper-of-joy-blanket.html
and the Lily’s blanket pattern, which is the simple possible pattern, suitable for beginners: https://www.dadasplace.com/2018/05/free-crochet-pattern-lilys-blanket.html
But to the Vintage style blanket pattern: you work in rounds, you don’t have to turn your work. Just to join each round with slip st. The second round starts with a beginning popcorn (please click on the link: https://www.dadasplace.com/2018/02/free-crochet-pattern-the-whisper-of-joy-blanket.html – pictures 7-11 to see how to make a beginning popcorn stitch. But this is 5 dc popcorn, you need to make 4 dc popcorn, so instead of making ch-3 and 4 dc, make ch-3 and 3 dc). After the beginning popcorn, make ch-3, then popcorn in the next chain space, and again ch-3. You should repeat popcorn and ch-3. When you finish the second round you should have 8 popcorn stitches, with ch-3 between each popcorn.
Hope this will help!
margaret says
Thank you so much Dada for your very long explanation. Its not that I am a begininer, I just seem to have trouble reading other peoples pattterns. I usually just plod along and make all my shrugs, rugs, baby stuff kinda out of my head, and I do a lot of knitting as well. But I loved you other ones and I am going to print them off this morning. The squares are beautiful. I am going to have another go at the other blanket, and I will go down to a shop called Spotlight, there are ladies down there that you can get help from, sometimes!!. I am not very good at technology being in my 70’s, but if I get the rug right I will get some one to help me but it on your page so you can see. One other question where do you source your beautiful wool from and is it available to other people, like me in Australia. I do buy a lot of wool from England! Loveknitting, and find them exellent.Beautifully packed and very quick.
Best wishes, and many thanks for taking the time to explain so much. Margaret.
Dada says
You’re welcome!?
I buy my yarn (mostly 100% cotton yarn) in my nearby yarn shop. But, unfortunately, this yarn can’t be ordered online, so if you live anywhere outside Serbia, you can’t get it.

Is there a pattern for the pillow as well?
Dada says
I found the pattern for the pillow, actually for the granny square in a Japanese crochet book.

Hello there.
Great pattern! Thank you.
P.S. shhh, but you have a misspelling on the one of the photos…
Dada says
Thanks for letting me know! 🙂 I must be blind!
Jennifer says
I love this pattern and have worked several squares. How do I join the popcorns in the corners together? I’ve tried a few ways and it doesn’t look right.
Thanks for the lovely pattern!!
Dada says
Thanks Jennifer! You join them together like you join other popcorns. Glad you like the pattern!
Sarah Nimetz says
I’m stuck on row 10. There are 4 popcorns total, but I only have room for 3, staggered between those from row 9. What am I missing here? Makes sense until I get to the final popcorn. Anyone else? Any guidance appreciated. So close!
Dada says
Dear Sarah,
Please send me the picture of your square to my email, so I can see how it looks, and to find the mistake.
Krystal says
I’m curious about the first set of popcorns I make into the first corner of each new round … I feel like there should be a chain there of some sort but I don’t see I indicated in the pattern. Does each new round start with a beginning popcorn of ch-3 + 3dc?
And thank you for sharing this beautiful pattern, I’m really enjoying working on mine.
Dada says
Yes, each round starts with a beginning popcorn, then you make ch-3 and regular popcorn. You can’t make a popcorn st after you join the round with slip st without ch-3, which counts as the first dc.
I’m glad to hear that you enjoy the pattern!
x D
Krystal says
Ah, I thought that was the case. I think that’s what I’ve been doing unconsciously anyway, lol. I’m only on my first square so I just wanted to double check before I got in too deep. Thanks for answering so quickly! ?
Dada says
You’re welcome! I’m glad I could help!
Tina says
Hi 🙂
Which crochet hook to use on the blanket, and what yarns?
Dada says
The yarn is no. 464 “Cotton Gold”, from Alize (the Turkish manufacturer) – 55% cotton and 45% acrylic. It’s very soft yarn. I spent 7 skeins of 100g, and used 4 mm crochet hook.
Patricia says
I would love to complete this blanket as a wedding gift. I’m on my first square. Round 7 says to double crochet 5, popcorn 5, then Dc, then Double crochet in the popcorn stitch. How do you double crochet in Popcorn. Do you go backwards?
Patricia says
Never mind I counted wrong, sorry.
Dada says
I’m glad you figured it out.
Lynne Baker says
Thank you so much for this pattern. I made it many years ago and have not been able to find the pattern anywhere again until I saw yours on Pinterest.

Hi, so glad I stumbled onto this site. I love to crochet, especially now that I am retired. Keeps my fingers busy, and me out of trouble. There is not a day goes by that I do not crochet. I have several afghans made, and more than 100 doilies. I just keep turning them out, and giving them away as gifts, and to family members………………may try to sell some of the pile this summer. I live very close to Chautauqua Institution, which have vendors all summer.
Dada says
Hi Sharon,
Yes, I know! Crochet is so addictive! Isn’t it? It’s also so relaxing and rewording. Selling your beautiful crochet stuff is a great way to contribute to your finances. Good luck!

HIi see here some very cute works!
as i dont speak englisg well i would like to ask if you have diagrams or charts for any of them?
from chart or diagram is much easyer to understand for me
kindly let me know
Dada says
Hi Gity,
Yes, there is a crochet chart for the square in the paid version of the pattern, you can get it here: https://www.dadasplace.com/dadas-shop/CROCHET-PATTERN-Fenya-Blanket-p126458101
Ele says
Would I be correct when I say the free pattern is written under the assumption that the crocheter knows how to turn the popcorn 3, 4 and 5 stitch into the actual popcorn stitch?
Thank you.
I hope I can guess my way through the whole pattern as the design is stunning!
Beth says
Hi! I’ve just started this blanket and I’m already obsessed. I do notice, however, that you have some half squares along the edges on the blankets in the photos, yet, there aren’t any instructions in this free version here on your blog. Are they only available in the paid version?
Dada says
Hi Beth,
I’m glad that you like the pattern! There aren’t any half squares in the blanket. Only squares. When you start, you’ll see.
Happy crocheting!
Lynn says
The pattern is easy to follow and I’m someone that sometimes struggles reading patterns. I just bought the pattern and it’s definitely worth it! The pictures and extra instruction is amazing! Thank you!!
Dada says
Great! I’m glad that it’s easy to read! Happy crocheting!
Patty says
Can you please explain what a magic ring is. I have crocheted a lot over the years and have lost my feelings in my hand to do to much anymore. This is something that maybe i can do since it is worked in squares, i may not get so frustrated that it takes me so long to complete anything.
Thank you – this is one beautiful blanket
Dada says
Try to google it, I’m sure that you’ll find several good posts or videos on the topic. I learned to crochet on the Internet.
Sue says
Thanks so much for this pattern – just started & am loving it. May help others if you showed just one individual square up close – a bit easier to then envision the pattern. It’s put together so well you have to really look to see where the seams are! Thank you again for sharing!
Dada says
Thanks for the suggestion, Sue. I agree, it would be helpful. I will try to add that to my (already very busy) schedule.
YVONNE says
Thank you for sharing this pattern. I have to let you know the sign up page is sluggish and l tried to claify my na me and l couldn’t erase my mistakes.. now l’m known as 6….. really it’s Yvonne
Amanda Kalenske says
This is one of the most beautiful blankets I think I have ever seen. I am totally confused though. You begin with a magic circle and then chain 5 for dblc etc etc etc. The blanket photo shown clearly has no circle to begin this Square and the pattern I am using doesn’t look anything like the photo. What am I missing here, is this the correct photo. I love the blanket in the photo but what I am crocheting is a triangle with 3 “arms” of popcorn stitches. I wish I could send you a photo, I must be reading this pattern totally wrong. LOL Can you help
Thanks
Mandy
Dada says
Hi Mandy,
I can’t say what you’re doing wrong, because I really don’t know. You probably read the pattern wrong.
Ann Marie Bowins says
I just started this pattern and love it. Could you tell me about how many squares you made for the blanket shown in the picture?
Thanks!
Dada says
Thanks! I’m glad you love it! There are 16 squares, 4 rows of 4 squares.
Alex says
I love this pattern!!! I’ve made 3 for gifts. I’d love to make the popcorns a different color but I can’t figure it out 🙁 any ideas?
Lori Grubb says
Would love to make this as a baby blanket . Any suggestions about number of squares .
Jamie says
This is such a beautiful pattern! Thank you so much! How would I go about increasing the size? I’m thinking blanket instead of throw 🙂
Dada says
Thanks for your kind words! 🙂 You can add more squares and make the blanket bigger.
Toni says
I truly enjoyed making this blanket – thank you!! Do you have a pattern for the cushion in the photo?

Dada says
I’m glad to hear that! No, the pattern for the cushion is not mine.
mika says

thank you for the pattern !

Thanks! You’re welcome! 🙂
Debbie says
Hi
Before I buy the pattern can you tell me if it includes instructions for the half square (triangles on outer edges)? I only ask because I see you didn’t include them here.
Thanks
Dada says
Hi Debbie,
There are no triangles in this blanket. It is made only with squares. And the pattern has all the instructions needed for the blanket.
Casey says
This is a gorgeous pattern! I ordered some pretty green yarn to do it in, and I can’t wait to start working! Thanks so much, and please continue to make these sorts of patterns!
Dada says
Thanks!
Kathi says
I have this blanket made by my Great Great Grandmother in off white
Hailey says
Hi, I really am enjoying this pattern so far! Only issue I’ve encountered is that there’s only 10 rows in this pattern but in all the photos I see the squares have 11 rows. I know the pattern well enough that I’ll just adjust it on mine but figured I’d mention that row being missing!
Hailey says
I’m actually realizing the green one has 10 rounds and the pink one has 11 in your photos.
Barbara Struck says
I am so stupid! What looks like half squares are actually the way the squares are made! Next time I will keep my big mouth shut until I either read through the pattern or make a square (like I just did!) Please accept my apologies and thank you for posting this beautiful pattern! It is really lovely!
Lyn says
This pattern works perfectly. Thank you so much for the time and effort you have put into this.
Dada says
Thank you for your kind comment! I’m glad you like it!
