Vintage Style Crochet Blanket Pattern

Vintage style crochet blanket free pattern

First, I want to thank you all for your kind comments on my previous post. I’m so glad you like my vintage style crochet blanket! So, as promised, I set down and wrote the pattern.

Just a few words before we begin. The Popcorn stitches in the corners (2 Popcorns made in ch-3 space) of each round are made of 4 dc, and I marked them as Popcorn-4 in the pattern .The others Popcorn stitches (round 6-10) are made of 5 dc (marked as Popcorn-5).

So, lets get started!

Free crochet pattern Vintage style vintage blanket

Begin with a magic ring.
Rnd 1: ch-5 in ring (counts as dc and ch-2), * dc in ring, ch-2; Repeat from * 6 more times. Close the ring. Join with slip st to third chain of initial ch-5.
Rnd 2: slip st to next ch-2 space, Beginning Popcorn (chain 3 + 3dc), ch-3, * Popcorn-4 in next ch-2 space, ch-3; Repeat from * 6 more times. Join with slip st to top of Beginning Popcorn.
Rnd 3: slip st to next ch-3 space, * (Popcorn-4, ch-3, Popcorn-4) in same ch-3 space, ch-2, 3 dc in next ch-3 space, ch-2; Repeat from * three more times. Join with slip st to top of Beginning Popcorn.
Rnd 4: slip st to next ch-3 space, * (Popcorn-4, ch-3, Popcorn-4) in same ch-3 space, ch-2, 2 dc in ch-2 space, dc in next 3 dc, 2 dc in ch-2 space, ch-2; Repeat from * three more times. Join with slip st to top of Beginning Popcorn.
Rnd 5: slip st to next ch-3 space, * (Popcorn-4, ch-3, Popcorn-4) in same ch-3 space, ch-2, 2 dc in ch-2 space, dc in next 7 dc, 2 dc in ch-2 space, ch-2; Repeat from * three more times. Join with slip st to top of Beginning Popcorn.

Popcorn granny square blanket free pattern

When I finished the blanket, I thought about the border, and given that I wanted very simple edge, in accordance with the blanket, which wouldn’t switch attention from the blanket, I came up with this border. It’s very simple and easy to make.

Row 1: 1 hdc in each stitch, when you reach the left corner of each square make 2 hdc in chain space before Popcorn, 2 dc in chain space after Popcorn (and before the joint of 2 squares), 2 dc in chain space after the joint (and before Popcorn), 2 hdc in chain space after Popcorn (in corners of the blanket: 3 dc in ch-3 space)
Row 2 : 1 dc in each stitch (in corners of the blanket: dc, ch-3, dc in the second dc of the group of 3 dc)

Row 3 : 1 dc in each dc (in corners of the blanket: dc, ch-3, dc in ch-3 space)
Row 4: dc in next 2 dc, Popcorn-6 in next dc; Repeat that along the blanket (in corners: dc, ch-3, dc in ch-3 space)
Row 5 & 6: 1 dc in each stitch (in corners make dc, ch-3, dc in ch-3 space)
Row 7: 1 sc in each dc ( in corners make 3 sc in ch-3 space)

Vintage style crochet blanket

I’ve been fascinated with vintage crochet blankets, for a long time. I’ve already made one for myself, the Smitten blanket using wonderful, free byHaafner’s pattern, which I absolutely adore and use every single day! So, I played around a little with my crochet hook and some yarn, and came up with this vintage style blanket pattern. I especially love how color and texture get on together.

The blanket measures approximately 105 x 105 cm (41″ x 41″), and it’s consisted of 16 squares (4 x 4). The squares are quite big, 23 x 23 cm (9″ x 9″). The whole blanket weights 680g.

I added very simple edge – a few rows of dc, and one row of Popcorn stitches (6 dc) in the middle. I thought of adding fringe too, but gave up that idea in the end, which is strange, because, regardless of the fact that I really believe in the term: “Les is more”, I almost never stick to this rule. This time I did.

This yarn. I really, really love it, especially this shade of green. It’s very bright, soft, mat, powdery shade of green, one of my favorite colors. And it looks like something from fifties or sixties. It has that vintage touch.

The yarn is no. 464 “Cotton Gold”, from Alize (the Turkish manufacturer) – 55% cotton and 45% acrylic. It’s very soft, and I enjoyed working with it. I spent 7 skeins of 100g, and used 4 mm crochet hook.

Vintage popcorn crochet blanket free pattern

This is me reading Elizabeth Gilbert’s “Big magic“. Actually, just pretending to read, because I had already read the book, before. And I love it very much! I’m a big fan of Elizabet Gilbert and her work. I loved her “Eat, pray, love” (the movie not so much), and I loved her TED talk about Creative Genius even more. By the way, it has more than 2.324.000 views on YouTube. That’s quite impressive! I’m surprised that so many people are interested in creativity! That’s very nice. I’ve always been interested in creativity and I found her ideas about this topic very authentic and interesting, especially the concept that Ideas are alive. The book is clever, interesting, inspiring, and very encouraging, so if you’re interested in topic of creativity and would like to live creative life beyond fear, you should definitively check it out. If you’ve already read the book, please share your impressions in the comments, I would really like to hear your thoughts about this huge book.

I’m so glad that “Big magic” and the vintage blanket I made, are in the same picture!

Japanese Lacy Crochet Shawl

I love to make and design shawls. I also love to wear them, and to give them away. So, it came as no surprise that I made so many shawls in the last two years.

The story about this shawl begins long before I actually took the crochet hook, and made the first stitches. It begins a few months ago when I went to my nearby yarn shop to buy some yarn needed for the project I was working on, and found myself buying totally unexpectedly and unnecessarily a whole package (10 skeins of 50g) of yarn I instantly fell in love with and just had to have it. When I came home I put the yarn in the yarn cabinet, and almost forgot about it. Recently, I was flipping through my Japanese craft books, and saw the pattern for this lacy shawl. Instantly, I knew that the almost forgotten pink yarn in my yarn cabinet had been purchased precisely for the purpose of that shawl.
The rest of the story wasn’t so much interesting.

I spent many happy hours on my couch, covered with my Smitten blanket, listening to Hay House radio (Radio for your soul), or to one of my favorite podcasts, crocheting this shawl. I always enjoy this part of the process. When I finally decide on the pattern and the yarn, and immerse myself in a meditative rhythm of crochet.

And now, let’s introduce you to this famous pink yarn. It isn’t actually “Tango” or “Golf” yarn from St. George. It’s “Piazza” from Fischer wolle, but having in mind that I bought it in St. George’s yarn store (and they sell only their yarn) I assume that St. George manufacture this yarn for Fischer wolle. The quality is the same as “Tango” yarn. It is 125m/50g 100% cotton yarn. I used 3.5 mm crochet hook.

The other thing that might you interest to know is where can you find the pattern for this shawl. I found the pattern in this Japanese crochet book.

This shawl turned out pretty big, it’s 192 cm (76″) long, and 42 wide (16.5″) without the border! It is huge, actually, but I love it and enjoy wearing it, especially in this cold and rainy weather we have here these days!
